Turning destruction into opportunity: How to build on a firm foundation after the shakings

Several years back in my hometown, there was a year marked by numerous consecutive earthquakes. These earthquakes led to significant destruction. In addition to many individuals losing their family members and homes, perhaps the most devastating impact was the loss of a sense of security. A home is meant to be a place of peace, rest, and refuge. During earthquakes, however, everyone seeks safety outside their homes.
We are on the verge of a period of upheaval somewhat similar to what I just described. Shakings are already occurring. Many face financial difficulties, aware that their jobs are unstable. Individuals we once depended on during tough times appear less dependable as they themselves endure shakings. Certain partnerships in work and ministry start to falter and are at risk of collapsing... There is a feeling of lost security in what we once trusted and relied upon.
During earthquakes and upheavals, true safety from destruction is not found in human-engineered structures or the relationships we rely on, but in solid ground. Spiritually, this solid rock represents seeking refuge and placing trust in Jesus.
While earthquakes bring destruction to what existed before, they also present a chance to build anew, this time on solid foundations. During the earthquakes in my hometown, I witnessed goodness rising from the remnants of the old and damaged. People from different areas came to assist in the reconstruction and rebuilding of homes. Victims received support in various forms, such as free train and bus tickets, covered electricity bills, and other aid, tailored to different needs. The goodness of God was apparent through different individuals, despite the devastation and numerous losses.
As you face upcoming challenges, prepare yourself with vigilant prayer. Take comfort in knowing that the turmoil will eventually subside, and new blessings can arise amidst the pain of letting go of the past. Reconstructing and rebuilding might take time and effort, but it is an opportunity for something new to emerge, given that it is based on the solid rock, Jesus.
“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” - Matthew 26:41
