Guidance and wisdom can often be discovered in the least expected places. In the ancient wisdom literature of Proverbs, the author encourages readers to gain wisdom by observing ants and their diligence in work and storage. Similarly, King David noted that the heavens declare the handiwork of God. The Holy Spirit seeks to guide you, sometimes offering advice in new forms. Are you attentive and able to learn through observation?
When I paint, often I pray or worship Jesus. This is one of the ways I creatively honor God. Over time, I've learned to co-create with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. One practice I follow is that if I accidentally drop a paintbrush, it's a sign for me to start concluding my work for the time being. At that moment, I shift my focus from enjoying painting to entering a secret place with the Holy Spirit, seeking His tangible presence. In the place of peaceful intimacy through prayer and contemplation, oftentimes "new pieces of a puzzle", something new that God is creating in my life, are being revealed. Usually I write down my observations while waiting for the complete picture to unfold over time. It helps me understand the direction the Holy Spirit is leading me next.
Today, I invite you to join me in practicing silent observation. After completing your usual devotional activities, ensure you reserve time for silence. Quiet your heart, eliminate distractions by recognizing any thoughts that interrupt the silence, and assure yourself you will address them after your silent period. If you happen to fall asleep during this time of silence and waiting, don't worry. Falling asleep in the embrace of a loving Father is one of the best ways to rest.
