Exploring the Art of Introspection: Uncovering the Treasures Within

Lately, I have been inspired by the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German pastor, author, and theologian, who gave his life for his faith in Christ and a greater cause, opposing the Nazi regime. He was involved with a group that attempted to assassinate Hitler, and in doing so, Pastor Bonhoeffer sacrificed his life for this cause.

As a Christian and pacifist since my early 20s, I initially struggled to comprehend Bonhoeffer's actions. However, by my mid-40s, I have gained a better understanding of his vision, passion, resolve, and determination. Over the past 14 months, I have been re-evaluating some of my fundamental philosophies, including pacifism.

I won't discuss my challenges with re-evaluating pacifism (or other -isms) here; instead, I aim to inspire you to reconsider your foundational values and philosophies as well. Through my personal quest for wisdom and knowledge, I've discovered that being open to "emptying" oneself of past notions and beliefs fosters a childlike openness and a humble spirit ready to be examined and to re-learn certain things.

At times, observing the life journeys of others helps us discover our own. Witnessing the sacrifices made by others can inspire us to make our own. Although Socrates was probably not interely correct when he claimed during his trial that "the unexamined life is not worth living," I am aware that the art of introspection holds various treasures, such as wisdom and knowledge.

Would you consider joining me in delving into the art of introspection? If you're interested, you can begin by asking God daily, much like a psalmist: “Search me, O God, and know my heart: Try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.” - Psalm 139:23-24 KJV
