Nurturing Heart's Pinecone: Reflecting on the Seeds We Protect Before Planting

Beyond their decorative purposes, pine cones serve a crucial role in nature. Like all parts of a plant, they have a specific function in the plant world. One of their most notable characteristics is the spiral arrangement of scales, which protect the seeds inside. Each cone is a marvel of mathematical precision, showcasing the natural beauty of nature’s geometry. Have you ever wondered why pine cones open and close so remarkably? This distinctive feature allows them to regulate seed release, ensuring they disperse widely when conditions are optimal.

The pineal gland in the brain of a human is named after pinecones in nature because of its shape. The pineal gland controls the body's perception of light, as well as wake and sleep patterns. René Descartes, a 17th-century French philosopher, concluded that the pineal gland is the seat of the soul. Whether it is true or not, humans are known for their ability to perceive, dream, and make decisions.

Much like pine cones, humans possess self-defense mechanisms that safeguard their "seeds" until the ideal conditions for planting arise. Consider today which negative seeds (such as unfavorable desires, opinions, attitudes) your heart is protecting. You may want to reflect on the choices you keep stored before these seeds are planted. Regardless of your preference, when the conditions are optimal, you will plant the seeds stored in your spiritual pinecone, and ultimately, they will yield a harvest, sometimes harvesting weeds.

“Do not be deceived: God cannot  be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.” - Galatians 6:7-8 NIV
