Some people are destined to battle or advocate for a cause. Throughout their lives, they've had to struggle for opportunities and learn to overcome challenges. This constant fighting and overcoming have become ingrained in their identities, leaving them unfamiliar with living peacefully and harmoniously with others. Whether they change their workplace or community, they will always find themselves in conflict with someone. If this describes you, but you have been longing for living a daily life in peace, today’s blog post is for you.
You can learn some life lessons from martial arts training.
As a teenager, I spent a short period training in karate. Reflecting on this experience, I've realized that I learned three valuable life lessons. These lessons seem beneficial for living daily life peacefully while engaging in prayerful battles.
Life Lessons Learned from Martial Arts Training
The first lesson I learned is that to adequately prepare for a fight, a student must have a sparring partner at some stage. There is a learning process that takes place through simulation. A sparring partner is an individual who trains with a boxer or martial artist to get ready for a fight. More broadly, a sparring partner is someone with whom a person regularly engages in friendly, intellectual, or political debates and discussions, acting as a challenging counterpart in conversations, work, or strategy. This is an essential component of training.
Siblings often act as sparring partners while growing up. Occasionally, their playful arguments escalate into more serious conflicts, requiring parental intervention. However, mutual love usually helps them overlook flaws and forgive, allowing them to move past disagreements. Similarly, brothers and sisters in the church resolve their disputes through Christ's love for each other.
The second lesson I learned in life is that practice leads to perfection. During karate training, our instructors followed a nearly identical program for students in every session. We had to practice the technical aspects of each punch and hammerfist until they became a reflex. It didn't matter if someone was a black belt or had no belt at all; everyone was required to repeatedly practice the technical side of the basic punches. This taught us not to overlook the fundamentals. Similarly, regardless of how long someone has been a Christian, the basics of reading, listening, studying, memorizing, and contemplating Bible verses should not be neglected in order to pray effectively and ensure spiritual growth.
Lastly, during karate practice, we learned not to throw a punch unless we are in a balanced body position. A correct karate striking stance should be stable, balanced, and able to generate power from the ground up, enabling efficient hip rotation. It is not just a static pose but a dynamic, temporary position intended to transfer body weight into the target.
When considering praying fervently for a cause, all three lessons hold equal significance. However, today I want to concentrate on the third lesson: learning to deliver a prayer with stability and balance for maximum impact. The Bible describes this as walking in peace: “On your feet wear the Good News of peace to help you stand strong.” - Ephesians 6:15 NCV
This refers to the spiritual stability and readiness that Christians gain through peace. Similar to a soldier's studded sandals, this "gospel-groundedness" offers a solid foundation to withstand spiritual assaults, assurance in salvation, and the ability to spread the gospel peacefully.
How to live a daily life grounded in peace and love
This chapter in the letter to the Ephesians uses the military gear of a Roman soldier to illustrate how to engage in spiritual warfare, not against people, but against spiritual entities that work through them. It is an important lesson to keep in mind when praying for a good cause. If a person forgets this, a believer will not live peacefully and will become involved in confusion, conflicts with others, and offenses, resulting in personal hurt. In such cases, pride and narcissistic tendencies take control, leaving individuals stuck and unable to grow or make real progress in life.
But what if there is a danger from a malicious person intent on causing secret harm? How can one maintain a peaceful life while facing ongoing threats? Apostle Paul provides an example of handling such individuals. He mentions a man named Alexander who caused him significant harm, stating, “The Lord will repay him for what he has done.” - 2 Timothy 4:14. When others inflict harm, trusting God with them is an essential aspect of developing a history of relying on God for everything, including challenges.
So, how can one maintain a balanced and stable posture while facing life's challenges and engaging in prayer? Different believers might offer various answers to this question. I have found comfort and peace by reflecting on the scriptures about Jesus’ crucifixion. Our daily struggles pale in comparison, and these scriptures serve as a "fundamental source" for everything, including finding peace. Jesus provided an example of praying for others, even those who harm us, and forgiving them in prayer. One of his titles is "Prince of Peace," which he demonstrated through a life of sacrifice and forgiveness.
These guidelines act as traffic signals and regulations for navigating daily life and ministry. They assist in managing the flow of various drivers, whether they adhere to Scriptural instructions or not. Just like traffic rules, Scriptural examples enable communities to navigate life in peace and harmony.
Maybe my examples can offer some guidance on your personal journey of walking peacefully each day. When seeking peace in daily walks with Jesus, it's crucial to anchor yourself in the eternal, rather than in things that might change suddenly (like prayer partners, family, friends, or possessions). Ensure that your soul's anchor is rooted in the prince of peace by immersing yourself in scriptures and prayer, allowing you to navigate daily life with tranquility.
As you read through today's blog post, have you encountered any challenges recently? If you have, consider bringing them to the Lord in prayer, asking for the grace to navigate daily life with peace instead of pride, conflict, opposition, or provocation. The essential element in overcoming these challenges is love, learning to love others as we love ourselves.
