What Do You Sing When the Foundations Begin to Shake?

When teaching basic English, I often use a children’s ABC song to help adults learn the alphabet. Singing brings enjoyment and laughter to what might otherwise feel like a dull and repetitive lesson. It also helps us remember what we have learned.

In a similar way, singing Scripture can help us remember what matters most when anxiety begins to rise. It can turn our attention away from fear and lead us back to trust.

As this new week begins, I invite you to join me in singing Psalm 11. The Psalms were written as Hebrew poetry, and many were sung as part of communal worship. Their words helped God’s people express sorrow, gratitude, fear, hope, and faith.

Psalm 11 is traditionally attributed to David. Although its precise historical setting is unknown, some connect it with the period when David was threatened by King Saul. David’s life was in danger, and those around him advised him to flee:

“Flee like a bird to your mountain.”—Psalm 11:1

Yet David begins the psalm with a declaration:

“In the Lord I take refuge.”

In verse 3, the fearful voices around him ask:

“When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?”

David was facing a situation in which everything that once appeared stable seemed to be collapsing. Many of us can relate to that feeling. Unexpected illness, painful relationships, financial uncertainty, or sudden changes can shake the foundations upon which we have relied.

David responds by composing a song that helps him remember what remains true. God is still present. God still sees. God remains righteous and just. The foundations around David may be shaking, but his ultimate foundation has not moved.

Through the words of Psalm 11, fear is transformed into courage. David does not find comfort by denying the danger but by remembering the character of the God in whom he has placed his trust.

Whatever challenges you encounter this week, consider reading Psalm 11 aloud—or even singing it to a simple melody of your own. Allow its words to redirect your attention from anxiety to God’s presence.

When your circumstances feel unstable, singing Scripture can help your heart remember what fear may cause you to forget: God remains your refuge, He sees what you are facing, and He can be trusted.

Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts. And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. - Ephesians 5:18-20 NLT
