What Happens When Small Cracks Go Unexamined?

A crack in a ship’s hull has the potential to sink the entire vessel. Not every crack presents an immediate danger, but each one deserves careful attention. A small surface fracture may appear harmless, yet it can expand over time or reveal a more serious problem beneath the surface.
Our character can develop similar cracks. A seemingly insignificant lie, dishonest action, betrayal, or attempt to manipulate someone may not cause immediate, visible damage. When left unexamined, however, these patterns can grow and gradually weaken the integrity of an individual, relationship, family, ministry, or business.
The painting Examine the Cracks invites us to look honestly beneath the surface. Its purpose is not to lead us into shame or condemnation, but to help us recognize the areas of our hearts that need truth, repentance, healing, and restoration.
Jesus teaches that our words and actions reveal what is happening within us:
“Words and deeds pollute a person, not food. Evil originates from inside a person.”—Mark 7:20–23 TPT
He goes on to identify the attitudes and actions that can emerge from an unexamined heart—including greed, dishonesty, betrayal, jealousy, arrogance, and other destructive behaviours.
As you observe the painting, consider what may be hidden beneath the surface of your own heart. Which cracks are beginning to appear?
What might they reveal about a deeper wound, fear, or unhealthy pattern?
What are you being invited to bring before Jesus?
A crack that is acknowledged can be repaired. What is brought into the light can become a place of repentance, healing, and renewed integrity.
